Surviving the Game as a Barbarian Review and Season 4

Nine years playing the same game and suddenly he's inside it as a barbarian. A protagonist who survives by thinking, in a world that forgives nothing.

A burly warrior in furs with an axe rests by a campfire in a stone dungeon, studying a map with a calculating look

Nine years playing the same game, a game so hard nobody has ever managed to beat it. That’s how Surviving the Game as a Barbarian begins, and that’s where its charm starts too: its protagonist knows that world better than anyone. But that doesn’t make him invincible, it just gives him an edge to survive. Undisputed top tier.

What it’s about

Lee Han-su has spent nine years playing Dungeon and Stone, a role-playing game nobody has ever managed to beat. Just as he opens the final boss’s dungeon, he wakes up in the body of Bjorn Yandel, a barbarian from that world, now real.

What makes it special

A barbarian who thinks. The premise is pretty standard, but the protagonist stands out for his intelligence and strategy. He doesn’t survive by being the strongest, but by thinking ahead of everyone else (and sometimes ahead of what’s good for the people around him).

A world that forgives nothing. The game world is extremely hostile and death is an everyday affair. Every dungeon here has a price, and it’s collected without mercy.

A solid story and an interesting cast. Plus a free piece of advice: watch out if you have a friend called Hans.

Season 4, with a new artist

Season 3 ended in late May and season 4 kicked off in late August on Naver Webtoon, after a break of about three months. It comes with a big change: MIDNIGHT STUDIO, which drew the first three seasons, has handed over to a new artist and storyboard team, according to namu.wiki. Korean readers are divided on it. For me, the first few chapters were a bit rough, but it quickly became part of the series.

In Korean it’s already past 160 chapters. Jeong Yoon-gang’s original novel, on the other hand, has been on indefinite hiatus since June 2026, after more than 900 episodes: the author wants to reorganise the story’s timeline (namu.wiki). The webtoon has plenty of story left to adapt, so there’s nothing to worry about for now.

Series info

Status: ongoing (over 160 chapters, as of October 2026).

Creators: original novel by Jeong Yoon-gang; script by Team The Jick; art by MIDNIGHT STUDIO up to season 3 (AniList).

My scores: art 9 · story 8 · characters 8 · humour 7 · action 9. The full series page is here.

Where to read it: on WEBTOON and Tappytoon.

If you like it, try…

If what hooks you is a protagonist who wins with his head, there are four more in my smart MC manhwa, starting with Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. And if you just want to end up inside a game, here are all the series with that theme.

My verdict

A thoroughly familiar premise, a protagonist who makes it feel different and a world where every decision matters. A must-read. Start now: season 4 is running weekly, so there’s never been a better time to catch up.
