Synopsis
In the Tower, a multi-floor structure that works like an RPG, Kim Gong-ja (Confucius Kim in the English release) lives a dull life envying the famous hunters. When he finally gets a legendary skill, it turns out it only copies the abilities of whoever kills him. His first killer is the number-one hunter, the Flame Emperor, and from him he copies the ability to go back in time every time he dies.
My take
The title may put you off a bit, but it also belongs in the top-tier pantheon. From a standard start (weak protagonist gets an overpowered skill), the story quickly moves toward something different, handled masterfully. The “climb the tower’s floors” format lets the author work with different genres around a common thread that pulls you in and stirs strong emotions. Required reading.
