Return of the Mount Hua Sect Review (No Spoilers)
A premise you've read a thousand times and one of manhwa's most beloved protagonists. Top tier, and the murim series that's made me laugh the most.

If you think you’ve seen it all in murim, you’re probably right: you’ve read the premise of Return of the Mount Hua Sect a thousand times. And yet few series will make you laugh this much or keep you flicking through chapters this easily. A well-deserved hit, and top tier without question.
What it’s about
Chung Myung, a disciple of the Mount Hua Sect, dies after defeating the leader of the Demonic Cult in a battle that nearly wipes out the great sects. He wakes up a hundred years later in a child’s body and finds his beloved sect reduced to a shadow of what it was.
What makes it special
A worn-out premise, flawlessly executed. Legendary hero returns, fallen sect, a world that’s forgotten him. Nothing you haven’t seen. The difference is in the telling: the story doesn’t try to surprise you, but it makes it impossible to stop reading.
Chung Myung. He’s one of the most beloved protagonists in manhwa, and for good reason. His understanding of the “Dao” is peculiar, to say the least, which leads to situations the other disciples can’t even begin to understand. His efforts to restore the sect to its former glory are as desperate (and exasperating for his fellow disciples) as they are effective.
The humour. I give it a 10, and it’s what turns a good murim series into one I’d recommend to anyone. Don’t worry, there’s plenty of action (it’s murim, after all), and the art makes it a real treat, but the humour is what takes this manhwa up a level.
Where the series stands
The webtoon. Naver Webtoon has been running it since March 2021, with Biga’s novel adapted by studio LICO. It’s had long breaks between seasons: season 2 ended in December 2024 and season 3 didn’t kick off until April 14, 2026. At least it now comes out every Wednesday, simultaneously worldwide.
In English. It’s on WEBTOON as Return of the Blossoming Blade, also on Wednesdays. In Spanish it’s called El retorno del Monte Hua.
The novel. Biga’s original has been running since 2019 and is still ongoing. The official English translation is on Webnovel, under the title everyone uses: Return of the Mount Hua Sect.
What about an anime? Nothing official for now. The studio has released short animations and the soundtrack on YouTube, but no series announcement, according to namu.wiki.
Series info
Status: ongoing (over 180 chapters, as of October 2026).
Creators: original novel by Biga; adapted by LICO (AniList).
My scores: art 9 · story 8 · characters 9 · humour 10 · action 9. The full series page is here.
Where to read it: on WEBTOON, as Return of the Blossoming Blade.
If you like it, try…
If you’re hungry for more murim, there are seven more series in my best murim manhwa, starting with Return of the Crazy Demon. And if what hooks you is coming back with everything you’ve learned, here are my favourite regression manhwa, where Mount Hua is the exception that proves the rule.
My verdict
A thoroughly familiar premise, an unforgettable protagonist and the murim series that’s made me laugh the most (always behind Return of the Crazy Demon, of course). A must-read. Get started before Wednesday, when the next chapter drops.
